Verisk Specialty Business Solutions recently hosted an interactive discussion at its London office, where Christopher Spencer, Graham Pickard, and Torbjorn Soltvedt shared key insights on evolving risks and underwriting strategies in Political Violence and Terrorism (PVT).

Join us as we delve into the key takeaways and insight from the event.

Verisk Maplecroft SRCC and PV outlook

  • Global Political Trends & SRCC Outlook: Civil unrest has become more frequent, driven by economic pressure, geopolitical conflicts, polarization, and social media. Looking ahead to 2025, there’s concern over an "election hangover", where new governments face fiscal pressures, forcing tough policy decisions, potentially leading to civil unrest. Analysts warn that Nigeria, The Philippines, Jordan, Serbia, and Brazil are at high risk, with Brazil’s rising crime and political instability being particularly concerning.
  • Interstate Conflict & Tensions: Global tensions are escalating, with U.S.–Iran, U.S.–China, U.S.–Canada, and India–Pakistan showing heightened friction, while Turkey–Greece and Venezuela–Guyana have seen improvements. Beyond military risks, economic concerns such as expropriation threats—particularly for Western investors in China—highlight broader instability.
  • The Gulf & Energy Infrastructure: Gulf states have kept regional conflicts at bay, ensuring investment stability through diplomatic measures. While Saudi Arabia–Iran tensions have eased since 2023, rising U.S.–Iran and Israel–Iran hostilities pose new risks. If escalation occurs, Saudi Arabia and UAE are more vulnerable than Oman or Qatar.

Sequel Impact

A deterministic aggregation tool used by 50 clients across multiple business classes. We developed an integration between Impact and Maplecroft’s SRCC data to demonstrate how predictive scores can significantly enhance underwriting accuracy. Using Impact’s API functionality, scores are retrieved based on location data, enabling automated portfolio analysis. The system supports advanced risk assessment, incorporating both damage ratios and distance-based impact modelling. By applying these predictive insights, insurers gain a more realistic and nuanced view of exposure, helping them assess risk with greater precision.
